Is the theme really supposed to look like this in a new install? By mmholt, 2015-09-12 via wordpress.org

http://thefuneralparlor.net looks nothing like the demo pages I’ve seen. Is that what the theme is really supported to look like in a new install? It’s practically unusable.

  • Not Basic At All By McCage, 2015-08-25 via wordpress.org

    Looking for a fine magazine theme which means basically: illustrated excerpts on a homepage with read mores link to a single post page, Magazine Basic is the best magazine theme I could find.

    First to mention is the responsive display on all platforms thanks to the 12 column grid layout.

    Great plus is the flexibility in the home page display in one or multi columns.

    A bit of a problem is that the theme is not basic at all: in spite of its name, it is very elaborated in details.

    In my opinion in a basic theme is should better not

    – use google fonts in stead of standard fonts;
    – shape read more links;
    – change standard editor style;
    – change standard excerpt length;
    – use complex css for pagination style;
    – use extra css for link styling;
    – use extra css for sticky post;
    – change the look of post comments and 404 pages;
    and more so that it would be more easy to adapt styles in a child theme.

    It would really be nice to have a truly basic version of this magazine theme.

  • No worse than any other mediocre free WordPress theme. By omigosh, 2015-08-25 via wordpress.org

    Several problems, no support, ugly and unnecessary CSS backgrounds. Menu disappears in mobile view on all three sites I’ve done with this theme.

    Theme is agonizingly slow, but that may be caused by WordPress itself.

    The only good thing about this theme is that it’s no worse than any other theme. Picking a theme is like going through a bin full of free stuff at some neighbourhood jumble sale.

    You waste your time and get what you pay for.

  • Has malware? By kavakati, 2015-07-25 via wordpress.org

    Doing a waterfall test on a site using this theme, I noticed a file named solid.png that was slowing the load time of the site. I attempted to download this file from CPanel and received a warning in Chrome that it was malware. So I checked another site using this very same theme and got the same exact warning. This seems a shame because I liked the theme, quirky though it may be.

    I’d say keep looking, unless you want to clean the theme. I’ll be replacing it on 3 sites, because I just can’t trust it anymore.

  • Parts of the theme are broken and the developer is MIA By figure2, 2014-05-25 via wordpress.org

    I downloaded Magazine Basic because it had a good rating but quickly found that due to some sloppy coding, I had to fix a problem with an extra </div> in “index.php,” the right sidebar ended up in the footer.

    The solution to the problem was offered by another user of the teme on the support forum. The developer never weighed in.

    My client then discovered another bug in the theme. If the theme options are set to a right and left sidebar, the right sidebar again ends up in the footer if there are more than 3 posts on the blog page. I reported this to the theme developer over a week ago and have yet to hear back. I may end up having to find another theme for my client.

    Update: August 7, 2015: theme developer updated the theme on August 7. Update broke the child theme. Again, the theme developer is missing from the support forum.

  • Pretty nice, out of the box By Suzette Franck, 2013-10-25 via wordpress.org

    This theme is pretty awesome, I was able to get up and running with very few customizations in about 30 minutes and it is very clean and basic, and makes use of the featured images in posts. Nice options in the customizer as well, including ability to set a custom font. Good theme for beginners wanting a magazine style layout and works great in conjunction with post categories. Nice sidebar, widget and layout options. Good amount of options, but not too many some themes I have seen. Pretty nice and it also includes a Custom CSS module in the customizer to tweak further. Works well with the Jetpack plugin.

  • Nice theme By yaoxr, 2013-07-25 via wordpress.org

  • Awesome mag theme. By keyalea, 2013-06-25 via wordpress.org

    I’ve been using Magazine Basic for a couple of years for a green blogging site.

    It was exactly what I was looking for. I realize that I need to update it, but at the time that I was setting it up, I didn’t know how to set up a child theme. Word to the wise: Instead of making modifications to the theme – like I did, set up a child theme, then you can easily update it, while keeping the changes that you want.

  • Gives a professional look By yan_vn, 2013-05-25 via wordpress.org

    This free theme gives a very nice look to a news blog and the front page featuring several columns size his great for improving visibility. However it lacks some flexibility and the header picture handling is not as great as Twenty Eleven by example (no featured image in header).
    All in all I think I will keep it.

  • It's okay By gibraltar33, 2013-05-12 via wordpress.org

    I switched to this theme on one of my gaming sites and noticed a big decrease in traffic. It’s not that easy to navigate and has SEO issues. Good thing is that it loads pretty fast. I think there are better options out there for bloggers. If you want to create a product review site, it will work.
